FWIW thunderbird-7.0.1-1 was the version released with F16. 

There is also a similar bugzilla which was opened with F15 which is now 
WONTFIX.  Since F15 went End Of Life.  
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=808326 .    F16 is in a similar 
situation.

The suggestion to try a fresh user is a wise suggestion.  One may also try 
starting with -safe-mode to eliminate an extension as the source.
