The contamination normally happens in the ~/.thunderbird directory.
go in and save Your Mail directory and abook.mab file and Delete your
whole .thunderbird directory , then restart Thunderbird and it will
recreate a new .thunderbird directory then reinsert your Saved Mail
directory and abook.mab back into the default directory and you'll be on
your way.
Of course you won't do this because your to scared you'll screw it up worst.
I do this all the time to fix problems with thunderbird.
