Thanks Jack but on F14 it was another rewrite, based on how it was handling tty's, and it's gone into /etc/init.
It's worked and now I'm receiving faxes on the 1st modem on the production server. Unfortunately, the PCI serial card isn't supported by the 2.6 kernel so I'm going to have to build another box anyway. Some jobs I wish I hadn't started.
