Hmm, perhaps I'm mistaken. I know for a fact that nslookup on Solaris 6 and 8 and on HP/UX honored the /etc/nsswitch.conf file. I *don't* know that that is the case on any Linux system but made the (probably stupid) assumption that this behaviour would be consistent on all OSes. My bad.
