NSA anyone? To non-geeks, software is about what happens in the mind, and there are definitely plenty of people who are silly enough to want to control what's happening in your mind. That they are silly does not make them any less dangerous when the governments of the various countries are giving their efforts a listening ear. If you want to be able to use a free-as-in-freedom OS ten years down the road, this kind of stuff is relevant. Sure, long discussions here are kind of off-topic, but the heads-up is not.
