There's no special ping group... 

what does 'rpm -V iputils' show? I bet you lost somehow the capability
bits set on ping. 

% getcap /bin/ping
/bin/ping = cap_net_raw+ep

if rpm -V iputils shows ping is wrong, do a 'yum reinstall iputils'
