Thank you kindly for your help.  Unfortunately, neither method
has any affect on the synaptics options, shown by synclient.
This surprises me greatly.  Both methods ought to work, I think.
But even if they worked, it'd be the wrong solution - a patch over the
real problem.

I can and I have.  A quick search for 'synaptics option' turned up
this:
Bug 613442 - synaptics touchpad options are not active anymore after
update 

I wasn't the first to write it, but I added my 2 cents.
Several others have run into this identical problem.
I hope it gets the attention it deserves.
