The first thing I do is install fvwm and run my own .fvwmrc file
and xsession script and avoid the ever changing gnome and kde
screen real estate hogs completely. It always works exactly the
way I want it to, and only changes appearance when I'm the
one making the change :-).

I do have to spend some time tracking down the plethora of
background daemons I have to start if I want to be able to run
individual gnome and/or kde apps (though kde apps usually
work OK without me doing too much).
