Not designed for any sort of use, then. Threading isn't just to do with
mailing lists, it means everything to businesses who need to keep in
touch with their clients, across several messages. I'm fairly sure that
buggering up those headers means their mail client is not RFC compliant.

I seem to recall bad things about Earthlink and Mindspring, as being
terrible sources of spam, and causing more spam if you made an official
complaint to them about it. So, unfortunately, I'm not surprised by
their attitude.

Any ISP that deliberately offers broken software, then tells you that
that's fine, just screams out "find another service" to me. How
important is email to you?

Don't send private replies to my address, the mailbox is ignored. I
read messages from the public lists.
