Hi Barry and Roger, thanks for reply!
My modem is Zyxel VMG4005, relative new model (
https://www.zyxel.com/uk/en-gb/products/dsl-cpe/vdsl2-17a-bonding-and-35b-single-line-bridge-vmg4005-b50a
),
but it may be any modem, which is able to work in bridge mode - there
are many of them. The modem only acts as a media converter - so I have
PPPoE on the Ethernet side and all the overhead is handled by my Linux
box - so I need ppp and NetworkManager-{ppp,adsl} packages on it, and
Linux has ppp0 virtual WAN interface.

This arrangement has the great advantage IMO that the public IPv4
address is directly on the interface of my Linux machine (unlike a modem
in router mode, where the public IP ends on the modem).
And for IPv6 addresses, my ISP provides one /64 "bind" segment on WAN
interface, and the other /64 segment is usable for the internal network
on the LAN side of my Linux router.
Pretty cool... I never wanted a modem in router mode...
