Generally, *that* aspect of gmail works fine.

If you use their webmail interface, everything goes through their
servers, and you've authenticated to use them.

If you use an email client program (Thunderbird, Evolution, etc), it's
usually set up the gmail servers to post through as part of the
configuration process, too, and that also works properly.

Things can come a cropper in some environments where all traffic within
a LAN is forced through their choice of servers.
