If this is the only reason why you’re trying to set up a serial console, then 
it won’t help.  Neither X11 nor Wayland can use a serial console either.  
You’re better off restarting services like GDM to figure out why it isn’t able 
to talk to a monitor.

Wayland doesn’t have as many useful tools for querying things like monitor 
settings, so logs are the best place to look.
