Yes, I realized that I wouldn't get any graphic output through the serial
connection. I was hoping I might see some useful error message.

The problem machine is using SDDM and GDM is not installed. I was able
to start SDDM (systemctl start sddm) and no errors were reported. I don't
see anything useful in the log except the service start.
