Bitrot was an issue, so each data file had a companion checksum file that was checked when using a file. With today's much larger data volumes, bitrot should be handled automatically. Btrfs does this, but there are some tradeoffs: legacy tools don't account for the extra overhead and periodic maintenance is required.
