Hmm, okay then that must be dig directly querying the external servers
and other things doing something with your system in the middle.  Still
a useful test, shows that name resolution *can* work.

Can you edit the "hosts:" line in the nsswitch.conf file?  See if
simplifying it helps?

e.g.  hosts: files dns

Are you able to restart the network connection?
