I think it's also about control: Web based content can easily be deleted by moderators - whereas emails sent via a mailing list to their subscribers can stay in users' inboxes forever. Remember all these past years when we were asked every now and then to "behave", to respect some "code of conduct"? If we're not nice in the future, our messages can just be deleted from the web interface.
