Every time I install a new version of fedora, I give the nouveau drivers
a chance to see if they have improved, and within a week (usually within
a couple of hours), the video freezes up and the system is hosed.

I then switch to the rpmfusion binary nvidia drivers and the problem
vanishes (till the next new version of fedora :-).

I don't know if you have an nvidia card or are using the nouveau drivers,
but if you are I'd switch to the nvidia drivers to see if that fixes it.
