CUPS is no longer the "Swiss Army Knife" of printing. It is still used "under the hood", but the end of PPD support was announced over a year ago <https://www.theregister.com/2020/10/15/apple_cups_develoment/>. Apple CUPS development seems to have ended, but there is a fork. Going forward IPP Everywhere <https://www.pwg.org/ipp/everywhere.html> (intended to support printing without drivers and originated to support mobile devices), is proposed to replace the use of PPD's. I'm not sure where this leaves legacy printers that pre-date IPP Everywhere. -- George N. White III
