Hi, You really should use a proper tool for the job. Something like partclone. That way you don't waste time & storage since you'll be saving *only* the used blocks. I mostly use CloneZilla (that uses partclone) but you can install partclone [1] in Fedora. Also, for your root filesystem I'd rather boot off externenal media (USB/CD) and then perform the image backup (with volume-group deactivated and so on).
