I was using a somewhat fancy SanDisk Cruzer Glide 3.0. Due to your advice I 
used an older USB2-only stick which worked ok.

I would not hurry to blame the new stick. Maybe the P1 circuitry, or the Fedora 
USB3 driver are the dodgy ones?
