I'll try what you suggest tomorrow. I have only the one workstation. No cell phone or mobile device, no laptops or notebooks, no wifi, old PCs, etc. Not even old parts. So the test will be removing the graphics card and the sound card only. Everything else is essential.
I disabled fast boot in bios solely to fix the problem of not getting the chance to make the workstation boot from a USB stick. I did not think it would have anything to do with the freeze problem or the shutdown problem. So far, the change is working: the boot process has not rushed to the regular hard drive grub menu too quickly. Thank-you for that fix.
I'd like to be free of windows, but for reasons I won't go into here, I'm stuck with it for a while more.
