I remember things like that, in the past, being associated with the
wrong permissions for the /tmp directory.  The graphics system wanted
to write a lock file, and would get upset when it couldn't.

$ ls -ldZ /tmp
drwxrwxrwt. 16 root root system_u:object_r:tmp_t:s0 400 Jun 25 03:48 /tmp
