Follow up: Commented out the references to pam_kwallet.so and
pam_kwallet5.so in /etc/pam.d/lightdm and et Voila! I'm back to lightdm
and Xfce4 with polkit behaving itself.

Thanks again to Francis for pointing me in the right direction!
