Ok so tonight I tried enabling, and I had to manually rm or mv the existing
display-manager.service file because enabling another DE would not
overwrite it. I tried both SDDM and LightDM... neither of which would boot
correctly, all  got was a black screen with no mouse. Alt+F# would not work
either. So I'm thinking she locked up tight as a drum.
