That may do it, but I still have no idea where the popup messages suddenly came from. I run my own custom .fvwm session and try to avoid starting all the annoying junk that a gnome session starts. In all the time I've been running f24 and fvwm, I've never seen those popups before.
Hey, me too! (Actually I've been using a Mac for a few years, but when I'm on an X11 desktop...)
Suggestion: when the popup is up, do a ps. Close the popup. ps again. If you're lucky you'll be able to see the responsible program (or some "alert" tool, invoked by the evildoer).
