You don't say what Desktop you're using or the video hardware.

I have a problem under KDE with a monitor not always turning on after going 
into stand-by
mode.  I could do various things in KDE's system-settings to get it back but it 
was a
pain.  I ended up using a few xrandr commands to get it back.

So, short story made long, maybe using the right xrandr incantation would do 
what you need.
