FWIW, SDDM handles switch user differently than GDM.

GDM runs as a single process on vt1 and takes care of all user logins. On my
system vt2,
vt3, etc are available via C-A-F2, C-A-F3, etc. If you switch to vt2 and then
back to vt1
there will be options to "unlock" one of the 2 sessions.

SDDM will spawn a copy of itself to login the switched to user. So, initially
SDDM is
running on vt1 but when you invoke switch-user it will spawn a copy to vt2.
So, after
that you C-A-F1 brings you to the first user and C-A-F2 gets you to the second
user and
C-A-F3, etc will have console logins.

I could not successfully get a second user with either GDM or SDDM. The GUI
failed to
fully come up. Not sure if it is due to the low end and low resources
available on my
test system or if there is some sort of resource conflict with the 2 users.
