And once you've compiled the executable, you are free do put in anywhere
you like. Such as somewhere below /usr/local or into your user's local
dir that's within $PATH.

It could be an idea to talk to the developer(s) about the missing Makefile
install target. Perhaps it's even intentional that the Makefile cannot install
the executable and that the local sysadmin must do that (if really wanted).
