Jeffrey, The new Java consumer was incomplete in the 0.8.2 clients JAR, so it doesn't work in any scenario. If you are using 0.10.1 brokers, my recommendation is to use 0.10.1 client jars. It will be much easier than using the soon to be deprecated Scala consumer.
