I finally got it to work. I built apr into /usr/local/apr and apr-util in to /usr/local/apru. Wiped out the httpd build dir completely, started over with a fresh configure and it worked, although it won't copy the apr_dbd_mysql.so into the apache install, it leaves it in apru.
