Not all characters exist in all fonts. If you change to a font in
which the character does not appear, there will be nothing to display.
Is there any workaround ?
Yes: use a font in which the character exists.

There are some fonts that are filled with arrows and not letters. One
of the best I use is called "arrowfont.ttf", since it is only the same
type of arrow but pointing in most every direction you might need an
arrow to point towards. There are others though.
Also, if you have a good Unicode font, there are sections that have
various arrow "styled" glyphs.
Here are the "section" titles and their glyph ranges in the Unicode
definition.
