Is the icon (folder vs endpoint) the only thing that was wrong? If memory serves, I've been able to view the attributes of destinations even when the icon showed as a folder...
Is option 3 not "remove the really old copy of the ActiveMQ client JAR from the webapp dir and replace it with the 5.9.0 JAR that corresponds to the version of the broker that's being used"? That sounds like the best option to me.
