Kit is correct, it's in the bin/activemq startup script: Shell: -Dactivemq.base="${ACTIVEMQ_BASE}" Batch: -Dactivemq.base="%ACTIVEMQ_BASE%" For some reason, the startup script must have been failing to determine the ACTIVEMQ_HOME variable previously. Are you running ActiveMQ on Windows?
