No matter what, I think you have to either configure the machine by people, wait to be contacted (and I have to wonder how you will be contacted) or you have to go outside to get the information. This is just part of the way tcp/ip http works. The cost would be miniscule. You only need to handle application startups. You could do it for all clients for about 10 bucks a month. I cannot believe that your product would not be worth that.
