I never thought I'd be saying this, but I agree with Jack. :)

I would say that starting a new thread along the lines of "Hey, look at this neat code I wrote" MIGHT be bad etiquette, and even then it's arguable. But Jack posted code within the context of a discussion that is specifically about code and how to write it, so I can't see how it's bad etiquette.

I've been doing this "computer thing" for verging on a quarter century now, been participating in online discussions of some sort or another for about 20 of those years. If I, as what can reasonably be described as an Elder Statesman of the general computing community at this point, am not offended by this, in all likelihood, you shouldn't be either.

Leading by example is good, except when you give a poor example. It's
generally considered POOR ETIQUETTE to post code, stack traces, or
anything else that adds significant size to a message. Put it on a
site somewhere and mention the URL to it in your post, or, if someone
specifically requests it, send it to them and not the list!

I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT YOU COULD EVEN ENTERTAIN THE IDEA THAT POSTING
CODE ON A LIST SUCH AS THIS COULD BE LACKING IN ETIQUETTE. THAT IS AS
WACKY A THOUGHT AS I HAVE HEARD IN SOME TIME.

I have no desire to lead anyone anywhere. I would like to be able to
talk to people without officious hall-monitor types constantly carping
about thoughtless nonsense. The post was for the code. If you don't
want the code, don't read it.

If you thought it through, and if you noticed that people ask the same
things over and over on the list, you might want to try something to
make that unnecessary. Doesn't this sound like a good idea(er)?

If answers are kept off the list instead of on the list, then all you
have are the questions. That would not be too good, would it? Wouldn't that be a real "DOH!"? Maybe you don't like the answer, but
that is not the issue you raised. Not only, in my opinion, is posting
code good etiquette but also, in my opinion, it is kind of THE POINT.

WHAT WERE YOU THINKING? What is maddening is that I imagine some
people will actually try to support this rather odd idea that a list
discussing code should not include code but should post it elsewhere. Lord!
