THANK YOU!! That turned out to be the missing magic word! Nowhere in the introductory docs that I went through did it say that the directory's name had to end in ".war". The flood of error messages has gone away. It doesn't actually work yet, but now there is an error message (concerning the datasource definition) that I can work with.
