Hi everyone, just wanted to jump in here really quickly because I am working with Sales Tax and Online Merchants on a day-to-day.
We actually do registrations, filings, etc. In the US, the sales tax system is very complicated. Tax liability is generally only given in a state, other than the company's home state, if the seller has "nexus" there. This is nothing more than a fancy word for "connection", meaning that if you stored inventory in a warehouse (incl. third party like FBA), have sales reps there or sell more than $100'000 into that state within the calendar year. So Steve, sorry to correct you here, but the sales tax rate to apply is usually based on the *buyer's location* (destination based). If the seller does not have nexus in the shipTo state, no sales tax is collected / remitted to the state. Rather the end user needs to file use tax in his/her home state. Of course there is "origin based" states, like Missouri, there, if the shipTo and shipFrom Adresses are within MO, the rate at the location of the seller applies. There are a bunch of tools out there that do these calculations for you - TaxJar / Avalara AvaTax. All of these have APIs that can be used as well (paid unfortunately). I am happy to answer any other questions regarding this topic. Have a great day.
