It has been discussed in past in https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CASSANDRA-4175.
I believe it is fixed in https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CASSANDRA-8099, though we have not evaluated the performance. Will be glad if someone can reply with benchmarks.
