I was going to say the same thing.  That after investigating ant 
source code I came to the conclusion that the jasper compiler 
exited with an error condition (i.e. called System.exit(9);).

That is a generic 'jasper exited with an error code and so something 
went wrong' error message. Something went wrong with jasperc.
