These are quite rare as the kernel is meant to keep a stable ABI.
(udev being an exception rather than the rule - see LKML threads on the 
subject)

In an ideal world, yes. But unfortunately the combinations that work for 
one setup do not always work on another. That is why there are many 
options, so that if one does not work, you can try the others.
Apart from a few "thank yous", I have received little feedback and so I 
am unable to do what you suggest.

The rule of thumb is to always try the latest kernel available, as this 
is where the bugs get fixed.
