Hi, >It isn't a known problem, so check your setup, cross-check against a non-XEN
>configuration and report it with the usual level of detail. First I have to say, that I am not a linux kernel expert, nor a programmer. I have the same problem as Nic James Ferrier. This mail is just a report of my unsuccessful tries to run uml virtual machine on top of a xenU virtual machine. I tried to play VIMINAL livecd (a VNUML livecd) iso file from a xenU virtual machine. The livecd boots with no problem on the xenU virtual machine, and the viminal kde desktop starts up like a charm, but I am unable to run the uml virtual machines embedded on the livecd. I tested the uml virtual machines on both a real linux host (a 2.6.17-gentoo-r8-skas3-v9-pre9 kernel) and the xenU virtual machine (a 2.6.16.26-xenU gentoo kernel). On the real host, the uml virtual machine boots up with no problem, on the xenU machine, boot hangs up with "Kernel panic - not syncing: start_userspace : expected SIGSTOP, got status = 256" (see more details below in the boot trace) As describe on that post http://www.mail-archive.com/user-mode-linux-user@lists.sourceforge.net/msg03997.html I tested several kernel configs trying to have corresponding CONFIG_HOST_* on uml kernel and CONFIG_VM_SPLIT_* on xenU. I tested all value (3G,3G_OPT, 2G, 1G). with CONFIG_PAGE_OFFSET having the same value on both kernels. Each time, the uml boots on the real host (2.6.17 skas3) and hangs up on the xenU machine. On other tests, where CONFIG_HOST_* and CONFIG_VM_SPLIT_* have no corresponding values, the uml virtual machine didn't even start on the xenU machine, just a single "killed" message was displayed. =========== uml boot trace ===================== /tmp/linux ubda=/tmp/essai-cow,/usr/local/share/viminal/filesystems/uml-root-fs-v iminal root=/dev/ubda Checking that ptrace can change system call numbers...OK Checking syscall emulation patch for ptrace...OK Checking advanced syscall emulation patch for ptrace...OK Checking for tmpfs mount on /dev/shm...nothing mounted on /dev/shm Checking PROT_EXEC mmap in /tmp/...OK Checking for the skas3 patch in the host: - /proc/mm...not found - PTRACE_FAULTINFO...not found - PTRACE_LDT...not found UML running in SKAS0 mode Checking that ptrace can change system call numbers...OK Checking syscall emulation patch for ptrace...OK Checking advanced syscall emulation patch for ptrace...OK Linux version 2.6.18-usermode-skas3-v9-pre9-fremap ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (gcc version 4.1.1 (Gentoo 4.1.1)) #4 Wed Oct 18 12:40:09 CEST 2006 Built 1 zonelists.
