You're being a bit exaggerate in describing this problem - it seems
like if "code kept in a private repository" is a frightening ghost
from your description :-). However, I'd say yes:

a) 2.6.17 works as you said
b) 2.6.16 has this "bug" (actually it's perfectly usable in many
situations, the ones where Fedora is not involved in the guest, with
a trick, but we're not interested in it)
c) If you care about using 2.6.16 (but you say you don't) go to
http://www.user-mode-linux.org/~blaisorblade/ and use the 2.6.16-bs2
patchset. Btw, the "fix" to this problem is the same as the one which
went in 2.6.17.
