This is due to the lack of TLS support in the UML kernel.  My patchset
(at http://user-mode-linux.sf.net/patches.html) and the -bs kernels
(at http://user-mode-linux.org/~blaisorblade) have this fixed.

Alternatively, you can mv /lib/tls /lib/tls.save.
