Try avoiding that... there's no need for that. If it seems to hang, it's 
either being slow or you're hitting some bug. Both problems are likely 
fixable by upgrading to a 2.6 release.

There's no difference between UML and the host.

The only explaination I can suggest is that possibly since you pressed Ctrl-C 
you interfered with the boot scripts and prevented them from remounting the 
FS read-write.
