Okay.  I'll need to figure out how to recompile glibc without NPTL then...

FYI, it looks like Xen has found a way around this problem.  Basically, they 
dynamically rewrite the NPTL instructions, with an overhead supposedly near 
zero.  I don't know if something like this is possible with UML, but it sure 
would eliminate a whole class of questions on this list.  And it would be an 
even bigger help for people with newer architectures where NPTL support is 
simply assumed.
