SLIRP got broken(in 2.4) pretty soon after support for it was added to UML. It was convenient while it worked, but it hasn't worked for a long time. Unfortunately, I don't have the exact version of the kernel it broke in since I just nuked my slirp testing kernels while cleaning up my disk.
