To grep content from 3rd party systems to show on pages or for whatever reason - the Magnolia REST client module is very helpful. You also may want to build a "content app" to display 3rd party derived content in a nice and Magnolia typical structured way - which then also makes it easy to select from such content when adding parts of the 3rd party content to pages or whatever.
