Heh - I think it perhap less necessary these days due to advances in filesystems and their implementation...

However, I do remember a time (many years ago) that failure to shutdown cleanly would sometimes result in 'nasty' messages on startup... Or just a very long wait whilst fsck (filesystem integrity checker) would run to make sure that nothing untoward had happened.
