In my case at least, the initial lockup took the desktop with it.
Afterwards it's just LC. I can kill the process from a terminal prompt.

Again, here, a list of packages you have installed on your system might
help us see what the interaction is - in particular (assuming I'm right
in thinking it could be clipboard related) do you have any clipboard
manager / assistant type software installed on your system?

And I can't speak for Richmond, but there's nothing like that in my system.
