Ok, my mistake, I can't get it to read from my desktop either so ignore this! Apparently it was reading the old file from the directory also (which is just plain weird.)
I did create a folder in the server root called stackfiles, made sure the permissions were correct and was able to hit it from there just fine (used relative pathing..
